The truth about Magnetic Filters

The truth is...Magnetic Filters are a useful addition to your central heating system. They help protect your boiler, prolong the life of your system, and go towards keeping your boiler warranty valid.

Magnetic Filters aren’t only for new installations, many customers have them fitted on older systems and still enjoy the benefits.

Over time, the metals involved in your central heating system start to rust internally, this rust/debris then travels around your system eventually finding its way to places it’s not welcome and causing blockages and overheat issues. Magnetic Filters attract that debris as it makes its way round the system and filters it out of the travelling water.

Filters start working from the minute they’re installed. They’re also usually designed so that the customer can clean them out themselves, or at least be done by your engineer on the annual service check.

Fitting on the return pipe, just before the boiler is best practice for installation, this makes it the last line of defence for the boiler and collects everything before it can cause damage.

With regards to boiler manufacturers warranties, some terms and conditions state that a filter needs to be fitted to keep the warranty valid. It goes a long way to proving the customer has done everything within their power to protect the boiler and so any faulty parts cannot be blamed on sludge/debris in the system and so should be replaced free of charge by the manufacturer.

Alongside a filter, it’s beneficial to fit a lime scale reducer, again, a form of protection for system components, this time on the cold mains water side. Especially useful on a combination boiler system.

In any case, a filter and scale reducer combination are a brilliant upgrade to your central heating system.
